Statement: The painting depicts a couple shrouded in low light, caught in an embrace. The Male
form is constructed into the form of an exaggerated cello, while the female almost delicately pulls
at his “strings” almost as if their interaction, while musical, is a performance with other musicians
behind them reduced to loose, shadowy shapes. The loose shapes and colours are reminiscent of
art influences of Harlem New York to enhance the setting of a smoky, hazy jazz club.
